It's not a good day for all of us who are doing Paeds.. firstly the timetable is rather confusing and secondly, we have a huge stack of lecture notes on our hands but we can't seem to find any lectures scheduled for them (can someone enlighten us? are those self-read materials?).
And the lecturers are mostly very long-winded and boring and the whole department seems very OCD and anal in general. I so miss the relaxed, 'you guys no need to be so hardworking one lar' atmosphere of Family Medicine (we saw one of our polyclinic doctors today in NUS and while Wk and I were frowning at her trying to place her, she actually smiled at us!). Also, it's been at least 5 years ever since someone had to remind us to not talk to my friends while the lecturers are talking and to switch off our handphones in lectures. And also give very obvious veiled threats warning us to STAY IN THE WARDS because they will be sending spies there and the teachers will get VERY ANGRY if they dun see us around.
The Paeds department is making alot of changes and $8000 dollar changes at that. What did you guys do for your tutorials at NUS last time? Cos now we have Interactive Sessions.. where we would answer mcq questions from the Powerpoint via this keypad thingy and all our marks will be tabulated and be a percentage of our final mark! Then the Prof says that they will try out the system and we nervously await the questions and nervously playing with our $100 each keypads which actually looks like a calculator. The Prof made a big deal abt how NUH spent alot of money on the thingys and (verbatim) 'we're not very rich and so you wouldn't want to lose the keypads, right?'
Wk started to test me with probable questions like "how old is a foetus?" and succeeded in freaking me out.
Then the first question flashed on the screen :
"Do you like ice-cream?" 1. yes 2. no
So we all pressed the buttons enthusiastically but no matter how many times i pressed my box just wouldn't light up. And then there was the confusion betw the colour of the boxes. Majority of the 79 boxes are blue in colour and only 3-4 are green. The lady-ic said that 'blue' means yes and 'green' means no. Which was quite a stupid system if you think abt it cos it means that we can all peep at each other's answers. And also.. some of the boxes kept changing colours!
Finally, after a very screwed-up 2nd questions "Where was the last world cup held" Among which BOTH Japan and Korea were options, and when the ic tried to get ONLY persons holding keypad 1 & 2 to answer, many other numbers lit up except for 1 & 2, the IC also agreed with the rest of us that the system is terribly screwed up and departed with the box of keypads.
At that moment my first thought was "they better go fix the system loh my grades are at stake here leh" and then i thought "why can't they just stick with the OAS?"
Sigh... not looking forward to my days in NUH
