Happy Birthday Singapore

I think this 40th National Day celebrations is being blown seriously out of proportion.

Liang and I went to Marina today in the car. The only reason we wanted to go there was because of the road block. They wanted to limit the number of vehicles entering the carnival area so only buses and army personnel and cars with special passes can enter. So most people just chucked their cars by the road block and walked in. But for us…

Scene at the road block: Many army men and policemen milling about the place.
Policeman (making stop sign): Hey you idiot ah! Can’t you tell that vehicles are not allowed to enter?
Liang (pointing to pass on windscreen): Oi you don’t have eyes one is it? Can see that special pass or not? I am VIP ok!
Policeman (grudgingly waving us ahead): Huh? Oh sorry please forgive my ignorance, O Mighty One. Please accept sincerest apologies from your humble servant.
Me (Chesire grin on my face): Teeheeheeheehee

(The above conversation was carried out not verbally but telepathically. )

Me: That was fun, let’s do it again!

And so we made a u-turn and went through the road block again, and again and again (no lar, kidding only).

We went to the carnival to see what the big fuss was all about. The area we went to was the concert area and according to the map, the happening area was quite a distance away, and being the lazy pair we are, we decided to give it a miss and walk back to the car.

On the map was also the program list for the week. One particular item caught my attention: 8 August 11.30pm- Countdown Party by the Prime Minister followed by a dance party at 12am.

Is the Prime Minister THE Prime Minister?! If he is, then good heavens (heh!) what a sight to behold. Just imagine the PM prancing around the stage shouting: “Are you ready to get HIGH, SIIIINNGGAAPPOOREEEE!!!!! And at 12mn people will hug each other in joy and shout out “Happy Birthday Singapore! And amidst the hugging and the shouting, one can hear the familiar chords of “Mari kita…. And the bengs and lians will dance para para to that.

To think the National Day Celebrations used to consist of the Kallang wave and a smiling president waving at us on a shiny car.

Oh well, anyway, I love you Singapore!
