Cheap food!

It’s been a record that so far you guys have pretty much liked every food that I recommend and I enjoy recommending, even though I may have to make certain sacrifices (frowns at you-know-who-you-are, stop laughing and act guilty) So your friendly cheapo gourmet is back with her latest recommendation for cheap and good food. Hmmm, actually, let’s make that REALLY cheap and not-so-good food.

I found out today to my surprise that Bugis village had sort of transformed into a cheaper version of Heeren. Funky clothes sold at pasar malam prices. The overall effect was a bit weird though, you have a clean air-conditioned environment but yet the shops are all tiny, crammed and the dressing rooms are not rooms but a small area cordoned off by a filmsy shower curtain. Anyway on the second level, there is this little café, creatively named Bugis Café. We decided to give it a try (forsaking my favourite grilled squid from Fish and co). They sell a variety of foodstuffs such as pastries, pasta and sandwiches. And get this, all the items on the ala-carte menu are HALF-PRICED!

So our coke was 50 cents, soup was $1.00, pasta was a shocking price of $2.00 and the buffalo wings(apparently their chief recommendation) were $1.75.

The coke was good. The soup was good, because it was self-service and Catecholamine dumped a whole ladle full of button mushrooms into our bowl. There was this garlic muffin-y bread thingy (or as they call it, garlicky muffin) which was in a garlicky league of its own. Warning: please eat every bite with a mouthful of soup. My seafood pasta was fairly good, although the seafood consisted of bits of crabstick and one prawn. Poor Catecholamine had to suffer through a vegetarian pasta containing nothing but mushrooms (which he hates). I personally thought it was ‘bearable’. You guys who know me should know to take this word with a pinch of salt, those who don’t, please bear in mind that I am a girl who can bear eating the science yong tao fu everyday. The buffalo wings tasted a bit too bland at first but this problem was quickly solved by tons of chili sauce and ketchup. So all in all, I must say the food is not too bad, if you lower your expectations and take into account the pricing. I like the open concept décor as it allows you to look at all the chiobus and wannabe bengs walking by. It really made me feel old when I saw what the younger generation is wearing nowadays. The furniture made me feel at home as I think the owner must have bought them at the same shop as Munchie Monkey’s. I got a sense of déjà vu as I sat down on a familiar red chair by a white table.

My advice is to go there before 31st May and exploit the cheap food but avoid it if, unlike me, you aren’t the cheapo type.
