My holiday
View from our resort
Firstly, Happy Birthday Zhihui! Forgot to wish you when I saw you just now tee hee… Sigh, we’re all growing old, albeit how imperceptible it is.
On a happier note altogether, well not quite actually. When I finished the pros, I thought to myself, “what if I have to do e vivas? Better go play when I still can. So I got my permission, packed my bags and bummed off to Redang.
Well maybe bump might be a better word because the 10 hour bus ride there is one bumpy ride. The bus driver was speeding all the way and the suspension system doesn’t seem to be working. And the temperature in the bus was close to Arctic conditions. All that plus incessant loud snoring coming from the seat beside me equals my lack of beauty sleep. The ferry ride there wasn’t much better. Imagine a tiny, pathetic affair that’s open air and 2 benches facing each other. It was a tight squeeze for the 10 of us and the many vegetables that were also our ferry mates. It was quite fun at first and the driver (sailor? Captain?) was rather drama mama. He asked us all to sit tight, don our life jackets and steered the wheel with much exaggerated turning and a “I have to save us all from these monster waves look on his face. I thought scenes like these only happen in movies. The amusing ferry ride was amusing for the first 10 minutes but at the end of the 1 hour, I was horribly seasick. We finally arrived at the resort which was simple but gave me a homely and relaxed feel. It also offered us 4 meals a day on the house and free flow of drinks which I abused happily.
The highlight of the holiday had to be the snorkeling trips. All those lovely, colourful fishes swimming around me, it’s really a breathtaking experience. And I found Nemo! I also found many fishes that look like pomfrets and the ‘chang yu’ my mum always cooks. Our guides started feeding the fishes and swarms of them just came rushing towards us. Some took a few bites out of my finger and one misguided fish even gave me a tiny nip on my thigh. It must have thought someone threw a big, juicy chunk of pig trotters into the sea. Kissing fish, Angelfish, sea cucumbers even baby sharks, I saw them all. One guide even dived down to catch a clownfish and put it in his mask to show us. Yes, just like in the movie! He was even wearing the same suit as the guy in the show. After seeing this impressive stunt, a silly guy proclaimed that he would catch Nemo for me too and tried to dive down but failed miserably as he didn’t realize his life jacket was still on. I wisely ignored his pleas to help him remove his life jacket.
But the one horrible thingy that marred the experience was that I’ll get seasick if the waves are too choppy. (Wenkai and Leonard, if you’re reading this, it’s not the laksa or your company that made me nauseous that time we went canoeing, it’s just me) I even felt like puking when I was snorkeling and was seriously picturing myself vomiting out of the breathing tube.
All in all, I feel that my little holiday had been quite idyllic. The food is not bad, the resort quaint, the scenery beautiful and the company is the best of all. I may post up some pictures, next time, if I feel like it.
Here you go, the photos as promised...
